Safety Management

What it was like ...

While running a safety workshop recently, one of the participants told us, unlike today, safety was not a priority when he started his working career (for a major international resource company) over 25 years ago. If fact, the topic of safety was mentioned just once every year, in a ten minute presentation that was tacked onto the end of the annual company review. The other 364 days of the year he said, "...it was put your head down and get on with your work and safety management was forgotten." Most people who have been in the construction and resource industry for the last 20 - 30 years can recount similar stories of what our workplaces used to be like.

Fortunately, attitude toward safety has changed dramatically over the past 25 years.

What has changed ...

Public awareness, Occupational Health & Safety legislation and growing corporate accountability have changed our workplaces for the better. Many organisations now have robust health, safety and environment management plans, safety systems and auditing processes in place and they spend a considerable amount of time and effort managing and trying to improve safety in the workplace.

So why are people still getting injured in our workplaces?

Sadly, even though we have made significant improvements in the past 25 years, workers are still being injured and killed every year in our workplaces. There is no such thing as an acceptable number of workplace injuries - even one is too many. Having the right systems, processes and safety awareness training in place to create and maintain a safe workplace are the first steps, but they alone do not ensure a hazard and injury free workplace.

Organisations must move beyond a compliance culture in order to become leaders in safety management. In addition to meeting the mandatory requirements, they need a guiding safety vision and pro-active culture to ensure continued improvement over the longer term.

What will it take to move your organisation from a safety "also ran" into a safety performance leader?
