Organisational Learning and Training and Development are not the same thing...


Training and Development is an organisational function, usually aligned to an organisation's Human Resource department. For many organisations, Training and Development focuses mostly on immediate need - skills identification and the training required to fill a specific job requirement. It seldom looks beyond that short term training need to how it might integrate into a broader learning framework for the organisation. As a result, the return on the training investment seldom delivers its full learning potential to the organisation.

Organisational Learning is an active process and takes a more holistic view of how both individuals and organisations learn. The ASTD defines Organisational Learning as "How an organization uses its collective ability to make sense of and respond to its surroundings." This includes what individuals learn in a training workshop, but also how individuals interact with their environment to experiment or gain new information, how new information is accessed by the wider organisation and what is done with that information to transform it into productive collective knowledge.
